The platform is expanding transparency around AI-generated videos while rolling out new tools that allow users to customize content recommendations based on their interests and viewing preferences.
YouTube has announced new measures aimed at improving transparency around artificial intelligence-generated content while also giving users greater control over the videos that appear in their recommendations. The updates are part of the platform’s broader effort to help viewers better understand the content they consume and personalize their viewing experience.
Under the new initiative, videos containing photorealistic or significantly AI-generated content will carry visible labels. These indicators will appear beneath the video player and above the description section, while a similar disclosure will be shown on YouTube Shorts. The labels are intended to inform viewers when AI technology has played a major role in the creation or modification of a video.
The move comes as AI-generated media becomes increasingly sophisticated and more difficult to distinguish from authentic footage. By introducing clearer disclosures, YouTube aims to provide additional context without affecting a video's discoverability, monetization eligibility, or recommendation ranking.
Greater transparency around AI content
In addition to automated detection systems, YouTube will continue to require creators to disclose when realistic AI tools have been used to generate or alter content. The company believes a combination of creator disclosures and platform-based identification mechanisms will help improve transparency and build trust among viewers.
The policy reflects growing industry efforts to address concerns around synthetic media, deepfakes, and other AI-generated content that can blur the line between real and digitally created visuals.
New tools for personalized recommendations
Alongside the AI labeling initiative, YouTube is introducing a feature that allows users to tailor their home feed based on specific interests. The new functionality enables viewers to provide prompts about topics they want to see more of, helping the platform generate more relevant recommendations.
These personalized suggestions will appear directly on the home page and can be modified as user interests evolve. The feature is initially being launched in the United States, with a wider international rollout planned at a later stage.
The latest updates highlight YouTube’s focus on balancing transparency, user choice, and content discovery as AI-generated media becomes a more prominent part of the online video ecosystem.
