WhatsApp begins phasing out avatar feature on Android and iOS

The messaging platform is gradually removing avatar creation, editing, and usage tools, signalling the end of a once-popular personalization feature, while allowing previously saved avatar stickers to remain accessible for users.

WhatsApp has begun discontinuing its avatar feature across both Android and iOS devices, marking a significant shift in its user personalization offerings. The change is being introduced in phases, with users increasingly reporting the disappearance of avatar-related tools from various sections of the app, including settings, chat interfaces, and the keyboard.

According to recent reports, the rollout had been underway quietly for several months but has become more noticeable in recent days. Users can verify whether the feature has been removed from their accounts by navigating to the avatar section in the app’s settings. In some instances, users are shown a notification indicating that their avatar can no longer be modified and will soon be removed, while others have already lost access entirely.

Feature evolution and user engagement

Initially launched as a way to enhance user expression, WhatsApp avatars allowed individuals to create digital representations of themselves. The feature included a wide range of customization options such as facial attributes, hairstyles, outfits, and background colours. Users could also animate their avatars, which would appear alongside their profile photos in chat information screens through a flip-style transition.

Over time, the platform introduced updates to refine the visual quality and expand customization capabilities. One of the notable additions was the integration of personalized avatar stickers, enabling users to incorporate their avatars into everyday conversations for a more interactive messaging experience.

Gradual removal across app sections

With the current phase-out, WhatsApp is eliminating avatar access from multiple touchpoints within the app. This includes the removal of the avatar option from the keyboard, effectively preventing users from creating or sending avatar stickers directly during chats. However, previously shared avatar stickers will not be deleted and may still be accessible through recent or favourited sticker sections.

The company has not provided an official explanation for discontinuing the feature, nor has it announced a fixed timeline for its complete removal. Instead, the transition is expected to continue gradually over the coming weeks until all avatar-related functionalities are fully withdrawn.
