The planned facility marks Uber’s first data centre investment in India and reflects growing demand for AI, cloud and digital infrastructure, while strengthening the country’s position as a global technology and innovation hub.
Uber has announced plans to set up its first data centre in India through a partnership with Adani Group, marking a major expansion of the ride-hailing company’s technology infrastructure in the country.
The announcement was made by Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi following a meeting with Gautam Adani in Ahmedabad. The proposed facility is expected to support Uber’s growing technology and innovation operations in India and is scheduled to become operational later this year.
Khosrowshahi said India is rapidly emerging as a key innovation and engineering hub for the company, adding that the new data centre would help Uber test, scale and deploy advanced technologies more efficiently.
The move comes as multinational technology firms continue expanding their digital infrastructure presence in India amid rising demand for artificial intelligence, cloud computing and large-scale data processing capabilities.
India emerges as strategic technology hub
Uber already maintains a substantial engineering and technology workforce in India, with Bengaluru serving as one of its largest global development centres outside the United States.
Industry analysts believe the company’s decision to establish a local data centre reflects India’s growing importance in global digital operations and the increasing need for low-latency, AI-ready computing infrastructure.
The partnership also aligns with Adani Group’s broader ambitions in the digital infrastructure and data centre ecosystem. Earlier this year, the conglomerate announced large-scale investment plans focused on renewable-energy-powered and AI-enabled data centre facilities.
The group has been expanding its digital infrastructure initiatives through AdaniConnex, its data centre joint venture, while also pursuing collaborations for hyperscale AI infrastructure projects in India.
Growing competition in India’s data centre market
India’s data centre industry has witnessed rapid growth in recent years as enterprises, cloud providers and AI companies scale their digital operations.
Several domestic and international players, including NTT Global Data Centers, STT GDC India, CtrlS, Sify Technologies, Nxtra by Airtel, Yotta Infrastructure and Equinix, are actively expanding capacity across the country.
Meanwhile, Digital Connexion, backed by Reliance Industries Limited, Brookfield Infrastructure and Digital Realty, is also scaling its data centre footprint.
Experts believe Uber’s entry into India’s localised data infrastructure ecosystem signals increasing confidence in the country’s long-term role in global AI and digital transformation initiatives.
