The strategic collaboration aims to equip Tata Electronics’ upcoming Dholera fab with advanced lithography technology from ASML, strengthening India’s push into global semiconductor production and boosting its ambitions in high-end chip manufacturing over the coming years.
India’s semiconductor ambitions received a major boost as Tata Electronics announced a strategic partnership with Dutch technology leader ASML to access advanced lithography capabilities essential for chip production. The collaboration is expected to support Tata’s efforts to develop and scale its upcoming semiconductor fabrication facility in India.
ASML, the world’s only manufacturer of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography systems, plays a critical role in global chipmaking by supplying equipment used by leading semiconductor firms such as Intel, TSMC, and Samsung. While the company does not produce chips itself, its machines are central to manufacturing cutting-edge processors used in artificial intelligence, computing, and mobile technologies.
Partnership focused on India’s first major semiconductor fab
Under the agreement, ASML will provide key technological support for Tata Electronics’ 300 mm semiconductor fabrication plant being developed in Dholera, Gujarat. According to a joint statement, the collaboration is aimed at enabling the establishment and smooth ramp-up of India’s first major front-end chip manufacturing facility.
Initially, the partnership is expected to follow a measured approach, focusing on technology integration and capability building rather than immediate deployment of the most advanced EUV systems. This means that while ASML’s most sophisticated tools used for producing 3nm and 5nm chips globally will remain outside the immediate scope, the cooperation lays the groundwork for future upgrades.
The development is being viewed as a landmark step for India’s emerging semiconductor ecosystem, which has been receiving strong policy and financial support as the country seeks to reduce dependence on imports and build domestic manufacturing capacity.
High-level endorsement and broader ecosystem development
The signing of the partnership was witnessed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten, underscoring its strategic importance for bilateral cooperation in high-technology manufacturing. According to an official statement, both leaders welcomed the collaboration between Tata Electronics and ASML for India’s first front-end semiconductor facility.
Commenting on the development, PM Modi said that India’s growing semiconductor ecosystem presents significant opportunities for young engineers and innovators, adding that the country will continue to strengthen its focus on the sector in the coming years.
Tata Electronics is simultaneously developing its semiconductor ecosystem through partnerships with global players such as Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) of Taiwan. This collaboration is aimed at enabling production across multiple technology nodes, including 28nm, 40nm, 55nm, 90nm, and 110nm chips.
The company expects its first India-made chips at the 28nm node to be produced from the Dholera facility in the near future, marking an important milestone in India’s journey toward advanced semiconductor manufacturing capabilities.
