Rapido has launched a new standalone app, Ownly, for food delivery. Ownly takes a new approach to the market by being a zero-commission platform, similar to what they did with their ride sharing programme. The app takes no fees from restaurants and there are no hidden charges. Instead, consumers are charged a delivery fee intended to cover logistics costs. The company says the structure is designed to reduce price mark-ups and additional charges typically associated with food delivery.
The model also mandates price parity across online and offline channels, with no separate packaging mark-ups. Rapido had partnered with the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI), which represents over 50,000 eateries, as part of building the platform’s restaurant-first framework.
The launch is accompanied by a digital video commercial that references industry concerns such as platform fees, inflated menu prices and discount-led pricing. Set in a courtroom, the film uses satire to highlight consumer grievances and position Ownly as an alternative model.
Back in 2015, Rapido launched and picked up during the COVID pandemic when it took on bigger ride apps like Ola and Uber. Now, with the food delivery service, the brand is ready to compete with Swiggy and Zomato.
Ownly is currently only available in Bengaluru, with popular restaurants and brands listed on the app. The company stated that they are focused on learning and optimizing the experience in Bangalore. He further said that the expansion is very much on the plans, and they will soon expand the app to both Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities.
